We want there to be a yoda, we want there to be a leader or a manager or a voice of authority that can tell us how talented we are, and what we need to do exactly to harness it. Cause it’s a scary thing to do, but what we want… and how we want to create does not exist out there. It comes FROM WITHIN, not FROM OUT THERE.

what is it about

In a world where dance shapes reality, aging virtuoso Sensei celebrates his protégé Juno's debut. As Sensei's ego flares, Juno's uncanny mirroring ignites a surreal showdown. Both dancers manipulate their surroundings, Sensei's massive, monumental creations clashing with Juno's fluid, avant-garde experiments. Trapped by past glories, Sensei struggles with fading stardom while Juno's innovative talent blooms. Their relationship evolves from mentorship to a dangerous power play, peaking in a breathtaking aerial duel. Sensei puppeteers Juno, unaware their connection goes both ways. In his attempt to control Juno, Sensei unknowingly orchestrates his own downfall. Too late, he realizes he's paved the way for Juno's rise, sealing his tragic fate.

The film is currently in festival circuit and will premiere online in Q2 2025. Send me a message if you want to receive a screener link!

Behind the scenes

This passion project was a perfect playground to dive into several new techniques that have graced our industry in the last few years. From exploring Unreal Engine and ComfyUI to experimenting with Midjourney, 3D scanning, and Gaussian splatting, each technology opened up new creative possibilities.

To share this journey and the techniques I learned along the way, I've created a series of videos documenting the process. These tutorials and behind-the-scenes looks cover everything from initial concept to final implementation. Follow my YouTube channel for updates!

THEMES

At its core, this project explores a theme that has long fascinated me: the delicate balance in mentorship. A true mentor, I believe, must nurture talent without controlling it, allowing it to grow and potentially surpass their own. This idea became the heartbeat of our film, inspired by my own encounters with both genuine and 'false' mentors in the creative industry.

In crafting "Juno & Sensei", we chose to tell the story from the mentor's perspective, aiming to shed light on the internal struggles and growth that come with this role. Dance became our primary language, allowing us to express the nuances of this relationship in a visceral, immediate way.

The process was deeply collaborative. Working with talented dancers from The Movers Amsterdam, we spent a crucial day translating our script and themes into movement. It was during this phase that our characters truly came to life, their struggles and triumphs embodied in each gesture and step.

As we delved deeper into the project, we found ourselves experimenting with various visual techniques. We explored 3D-scanning, AI-assisted image manipulation, and Unreal Engine integration, not for their novelty, but as tools to better express the emotional landscape of our characters. These methods allowed us to create visual metaphors that reflected the contrast between established traditions and emerging, fluid creativity.

This project has been a significant step in my own artistic journey, pushing me to explore more personal, challenging themes in my work. While the process was not without its challenges, particularly in the intensive post-production phase, each obstacle has been a valuable lesson in creativity, collaboration, and the craft of filmmaking.
